Kindness Rewarded, Cruelty Punished: A Deep Dive into the Fairytale "The Colony of Cats"

Fairytales have long served as our moral compass, weaving timeless lessons into fantastical narratives of magic, royalty, and talking animals. While we all know the tales of Cinderella and Snow White, there are countless other stories that offer profound insights into human nature. One such hidden gem is "The Colony of Cats," a classic European fairytale that masterfully explores the age-old themes of kindness versus cruelty, humility versus greed, and the idea that our true character will always, eventually, be revealed to the world.

This story, with its unique magical guardians and starkly different heroines, serves as a powerful reminder of why these simple tales continue to resonate with us centuries later.

A Classic Conflict: The Virtuous Heroine and Her Cruel Sister

The story sets a familiar stage: a home dominated by injustice. We meet Lizina, a kind-hearted and patient young woman who is mistreated by her mother and older sister, Peppina. Driven to despair, Lizina leaves home for a strange and legendary place of employment: a deserted house run entirely by a colony of intelligent, talking cats.

This magical setup is more than just a whimsical detail; it's the perfect crucible for a test of character. The cats are not ordinary animals; they are a civilized community that requires a servant to cook their meals and clean their home. They are, in essence, the ultimate, impartial judges, observing every action of the humans who enter their world.

A Trial of Kindness: How Each Sister Reveals Her True Nature

The core of the fairytale unfolds as each sister takes her turn working for the cats, and their true natures are immediately put on display.

When Lizina arrives, her actions are driven by inherent empathy. She doesn't just perform her duties; she goes above and beyond. She is gentle with the kittens, patiently nurses the elderly lame tabby on her lap, and brings a sense of peace and order to the house. Her work is a reflection of her good heart. As a result, the cats unanimously report to their patriarch, the wise Father Gatto, that "we have never had so good a servant!"

In stark contrast, when the jealous Peppina arrives, driven by a greedy desire for the same rewards, her cruelty is instantly apparent. She is surly, neglectful, and violent. She slams the door on the cats, strikes a mischievous kitten with a rolling-pin, and allows the house to fall into filth. Her work is a reflection of her selfish and ugly soul. The cats report her abuses to Father Gatto, begging him to send her away.

Symbolism and Consequence: The Golden Star and the Donkey's Tail

The story's most powerful moment comes during the magical judgment in the cellar. Father Gatto presents each girl with two large jars—one filled with common oil, the other with shining liquid gold—and asks, "In which of these jars shall I dip you?"

  • Lizina's Judgment: Exhibiting her characteristic humility, Lizina timidly chooses the jar of oil, thinking to herself, "I could not ask to be bathed in gold." Because she does not feel entitled to the greater prize, Father Gatto declares she has "deserved something better" and plunges her into the liquid gold. She emerges shining, and when she follows the cat's advice to turn towards a crowing cock, a beautiful golden star appears on her forehead—an external symbol of her inner purity and virtue.

  • Peppina's Judgment: When presented with the same choice, the greedy Peppina immediately demands, "In the liquid gold." Father Gatto, his eyes darting fire, declares, "You have not deserved it," and throws her into the oil, then rolls her in ashes. When she follows his final, vengeful advice to turn towards a braying donkey, a donkey's tail sprouts from her forehead—an external symbol of her foolishness and ugly nature.

What "The Colony of Cats" Teaches Us

Beyond its enchanting narrative, this fairytale delivers clear and enduring lessons:

  • True Character is Revealed Through Action: Both sisters were given the same opportunity. Their choices and actions in the cats' home, far from their mother's influence, revealed who they truly were.

  • Humility is Rewarded, Greed is Punished: Lizina’s reward was magnified because of her humility. Peppina’s punishment was worsened by her arrogant greed. The story suggests that demanding a reward you haven't earned leads only to ruin.

  • Inner Beauty Will Shine Through: Ultimately, the prince is not fooled by the mother's deception. The cats, who know Lizina's true worth, sing out to reveal the truth, and her golden star—a mark of her goodness—cannot be hidden.

"The Colony of Cats" is a captivating tale that reaffirms the values of kindness, diligence, and integrity. It reminds us that even when no one is watching, our actions define us, and that a good heart is a treasure more valuable than all the liquid gold in the world.
